Winter in the Algarve: weather, best places to stay & things to do
The Algarve has the mildest winter of mainland Europe — afternoons of 17–20°C, more than six hours of sunshine a day, and villas at up to 60% off high-season rates. If you want warm, sunny days while the rest of Europe is grey, this is it.

How warm is the Algarve in winter?
Daytime highs sit between 17°C and 20°C from November through March — warm enough for lunch outside, golf and beach walks. Nights are cool at 8–11°C, but most days bring 6–7 hours of sunshine. Rain, when it comes, passes quickly rather than settling in for weeks.
| Month | Avg high | Avg low | Rain days | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| November | 20°C | 11°C | 7 | Pleasant high of 20°C — ideal for golf, coastal walks and outdoor lunches. |
| December | 17°C | 9°C | 8 | Mild, bright and the warmest winter destination in mainland Europe. |
| January | 16°C | 8°C | 8 | Crisp mornings, sunny 16°C afternoons — warmer than most of Spain, France or Italy. |
| February | 17°C | 9°C | 6 | Almond blossom season, longer days and 17°C afternoons. |
| March | 19°C | 10°C | 5 | Spring arrives early with 19°C days, wildflowers and a warming sea. |
Where should you stay in the Algarve in winter?
The best base depends on what you want out of winter. In summer most of the coast is busy; in winter, only the larger towns stay fully open. Here's how the main areas compare.
Albufeira
Best all-round base for long winter stays
Largest year-round town in the Algarve — restaurants, supermarkets, pharmacies and medical care all open through winter. Marina, Old Town and beaches within a short drive.
Olhos de Água & Galé
Quiet coastal villages, walkable to beach
Smaller, calmer, and residential. Perfect if you want daily beach walks, quiet mornings, and a short drive to Albufeira for shopping.
Vilamoura
Golfers and marina lovers
Purpose-built resort with five championship golf courses within 10 minutes. Marina restaurants stay open all winter.
Tavira & the eastern Algarve
Culture, quiet and traditional Portugal
Historic town, Roman bridge, sandbar islands. Milder microclimate. Fewer expats, more local life.
What to look for in an Algarve winter villa
Summer villas and winter villas are not the same thing. Portuguese building code assumes cooling, not heating — so a beautiful summer let can be miserable in January. Insist on all five:
- Heated pool — usually around 20°C, good for a dip on warm afternoons.
- Central or ducted heating in every bedroom, not just plug-in radiators.
- Double glazing and insulated walls — check the listing or ask.
- Sheltered outdoor space so you can eat outside on sunny days.
- Utilities included or a clear cap — winter heating bills can otherwise triple your rent.
Things to do in the Algarve in winter
Winter is peak season for everything except beach lounging. Fewer crowds, cheaper prices, and the interior of the region becomes accessible again.
- Play golf at Salgados, Balaia, Vilamoura or Vale do Lobo — winter green fees are 40–60% cheaper than summer
- Walk the Seven Hanging Valleys trail between Praia da Marinha and Praia de Vale Centeanes
- Visit Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente for dramatic Atlantic cliffs and Europe's south-westernmost point
- Explore Silves and its Moorish castle — inland, warmer, and quieter in winter
- Kayak the Benagil sea caves — calm mornings in November and March are ideal
- Day-trip to Seville by car (~2.5 hours) for tapas and flamenco
- Almond blossom walks in the hills above Loulé in late January and February
- Local markets — Loulé (Saturday) and Olhão (fresh fish, daily) are open year-round
When to book a winter villa in the Algarve
The best long-stay winter villas are usually gone by early September. If you're planning to spend 2–3 months here, aim to book between April and August of the same year. Late enquiries can still work — but expect less choice, especially for 4+ bedroom villas with heated pools.
Frequently asked questions about winter in the Algarve
Is the Algarve warm enough to stay all winter?
Yes. Daytime highs stay between 17–20°C from November to March, with 6–7 hours of sunshine most days. It is the mildest winter climate in mainland Europe — warm enough for outdoor lunches, golf and coastal walks. You'll want a jumper in the evening, but many days feel like a British spring afternoon.
Which is the best town to stay in the Algarve in winter?
Albufeira is the best all-round base — it's the largest year-round town, so restaurants, supermarkets, pharmacies and healthcare all stay open. Nearby Olhos de Água and Galé are quieter alternatives with easy access to Albufeira.
Do I need a heated pool?
Yes, if you want to swim. Unheated Algarve pools drop to about 12–14°C in December and January. A heated pool will take the edge off and reach around 20°C, fine for a quick dip on a warm afternoon. Every villa we list has a heated pool.
What is there to do in the Algarve in winter?
Golf, coastal hiking, sea-cave kayaking on calm days, food markets, day trips to Seville, Silves and Sagres, and almond blossom walks in February. The Algarve stays active in winter — it's just quieter and cheaper than summer.
How much can I save by staying for a full month or longer?
Long-stay winter rates are typically 50–70% below high-season weekly prices. A 3-month stay is usually the best value — see the discount ladder on our villa pages.
Do I need a car?
For a long winter stay, yes. Public transport between towns is limited off-season. Winter car hire is inexpensive — often €200–350 per month.
