Portuguese building code doesn't require winter heating — single-glazed windows and un-insulated walls are still common. Do Albufeira villas have heating?
Only some. Portuguese building code assumes summer cooling, not winter heating. Every villa we list has modern AC heating/cooling in every bedroom plus a heated pool.
Is Albufeira quiet in winter?

How does Albufeira compare with Vilamoura or Lagos in winter?
Vilamoura has a resort feel and tends to be more expensive, driven by the golf premium. Lagos has a younger crowd and a longer drive from Faro airport. Albufeira sits in the middle on price and has the biggest year-round community, which makes it the easiest place to settle for a first Algarve winter.
Do I need a car in Albufeira?
Inside town, much of the Marina and Old Town is walkable. For weekly shops, golf, day trips and the outlying beaches a car is much easier, and it's usually the biggest quality-of-life upgrade for a long stay. Long-term winter hire is cheap and stress-free — most guests renew monthly.
What's healthcare like in Albufeira?
There are several private clinics in Albufeira and Vilamoura with English-speaking GPs, dentists and physios — most long-stayers use them for day-to-day care. Faro's public hospital (Hospital Central do Algarve) is 30 minutes away and handles emergencies. Pharmacies are plentiful and pharmacists speak English.
Is there a real expat community?
Yes — Albufeira has the largest established British, Irish, Dutch and Scandinavian community on the Algarve, plus long-standing German and French groups. Meet-ups, church services, book clubs, walking groups and bridge nights all run through winter. It's the easiest Algarve town to arrive in knowing nobody.
Can I stay longer than three months on a British or non-EU passport?
The standard Schengen rule allows 90 days visa-free in any 180. For a full four-to-six-month winter, or for repeat trips, Portugal's D7 (passive income / retirement) visa is the usual route and many of our returning guests have used it. Portuguese consulates in London, Dublin and Manchester handle UK applications.
