Second wave. Choice is thinner but options remain, especially for 1-month and shoulder-season stays.

Late enquiries still work. You'll pay closer to full rate for the first two weeks but get healthy long-stay discounts from mid-November.

How much does a long-stay winter villa in the Algarve cost?

A private 3-bed villa with heated pool typically runs €2,500–€4,500 per month in winter, depending on location and size. That's 50–70% less than the same villa in July, and for many retired guests it works out cheaper than heating a house at home. Utilities are usually extra or capped.

Do I need a visa to spend the winter in the Algarve?

UK, US, Canadian and most non-EU visitors get 90 days visa-free in the Schengen area — that covers a full December-to-February stay. For longer, or for repeat winters, Portugal's D7 (passive income / retirement) visa is the standard route and is well-suited to retirees on pensions or rental income. How does healthcare work for a long stay?

Bring your EHIC/GHIC card (UK/EU) for the public system, plus travel insurance for the gaps. Most long-stayers use private clinics in Albufeira and Vilamoura for day-to-day care — English-speaking GPs, dentists and physios, appointments usually within 24 hours, €60–€90 per consultation. Faro's hospital is 30 minutes from most Albufeira and Galé villas for anything more serious.

Do I need a car?

For anything longer than a week, almost always yes. Public transport between towns is limited off-season and villas are usually a short drive from shops and restaurants rather than in walking distance.

Can I work remotely from an Algarve winter villa?

The time zone matches the UK so a UK 9-to-5 lines up, and CET calls only lose an hour. Internet speeds vary by villa — check the specific property before booking if reliable video calls matter.

Can I bring my dog?

Some villas allow pets, sometimes with an extra cleaning fee, others don't. Ask about the specific property when enquiring. Praia da Galé and the Salgados dunes are among the more dog-friendly winter beaches in the area.

What do people underestimate about a long Algarve winter?

Three things. Evenings are cooler than they expect — Portuguese houses are built for summer, so a villa with real AC heating (not plug-in radiators) matters more than the daytime forecast suggests. Without a car you'll feel stuck quickly.
