Long-stay guide
Long-stay Algarve winter: how a 1, 2 or 3-month villa rental works
Winter is when villa rentals in the Algarve stop being a splurge and start being cheaper per month than heating a house at home. Here's how the pricing, planning and practicalities actually work.

Discount ladder — the longer you stay, the less you pay
| Length of stay | Off summer rate | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 month | Up to 40% | Testing the Algarve winter, escape from Christmas grey. |
| 2 months | Up to 55% | Sweet spot — enough time to settle, big saving vs. weekly rates. |
| 3 months | Up to 60% | Best value. Covers December–February, the harshest home months. |
| 4+ months | Custom | Snowbirds. Contact us for shoulder-season packages. |
Cheaper than staying home
Heated pool, warm rooms, sun. Often less per month than a winter heating bill in northern Europe.
Utilities matter
Always confirm whether electricity and gas are included, capped or metered — running AC heating daily adds up.
Getting here
Faro airport takes flights from most of Europe year-round. Cheapest weeks are mid-January to mid-March.
When to book
April–August for the best villas. October if you're flexible on which villa and location.
FAQs
How much does a long-stay winter villa in the Algarve cost?
A private 3-bed villa with heated pool typically runs €2,500–€4,500 per month in winter, depending on location and size. That's 50–70% less than the same villa in July. Utilities are usually extra or capped.
Do I need a visa to spend the winter in the Algarve?
UK, US, Canadian and most non-EU visitors get 90 days visa-free in the Schengen area. That covers a 3-month winter stay. For longer, look at Portugal's D7 or digital nomad visas.
What's included in long-stay pricing?
Weekly cleaning and linen change, Wi-Fi, and heated pool are standard. Utilities (electricity, gas, water) are usually either included with a fair-use cap or billed at cost. We list this per villa.
When should I book?
The best long-stay villas go between April and August for the following winter. Late enquiries can still work in October and November, especially for 1-month stays.
Do I need a car?
Yes for anything more than a week. Winter car hire is €200–€350 a month. Public transport between towns is limited off-season.
